The Sony NEX FS 100 – HDSLR Killer?!

Sony has recently released a new camera – the NEX FS 100 and the team over at F Stop Academy got their hands on it first. It is pegged to rival the SLR market that has dominated low budget – high production value shoots over the past two years.

“James from hangmanstudios.com teamed up with Den from fstopacademy.com and we pulled off this amazing shoot in 48hrs. Needless to say we didn’t get much sleep but we valued the opportunity and wanted to shoot as much as we could in as many environments as we could.

We especially wanted to push the low light capability and use the in camera media. It shoots to SD cards, Sony Memory sticks and also has a 128GB FMU which is a solid state pack that integrates with the camera and will give up to 10 hrs record time at 24mb/s AVC HD.

We shot everything at 24mb/s AVC HD and ingested into FCP and transcoded to ProRes 422 using Log and transfer.

Shot over a 36 hr period in one weekend on one of only 2 prototype NEX FS 100 Cameras in the world.

We used 3 lenses:
A Sony Alpha 50mm f1.4 with alpha to emount adaptor
A E mount 16mm f2.8

The Stock lens 18-200 f3.5-5.6”

Coming in at around £5000 with a stock lens it is pricer than an SLR rig but the added video features make it a godsend for those fed up with ‘rolling shutter’ issues and aliasing that SLR video is known for. The video processors mean that shooting at higher isos isn’t as noisy as on HDSLRs – which is a significant improvement – especially considering SLRs are typically more sensitive in low light. This improvement along with a host of others really does make this a HDSLR killer if your budget can stretch to it. Even cameras with ‘Magic Lantern’ installed can’t compete.

As for its other rivals… The NEX FS101 has a super 35 mm sensor similar to the APS-C sensors used in the 7D, 60D, 600D and 550D. This is compatible with PL lenses (adapter required) and super 35 is the digital cinema standard (which is why you don’t see Cannon 5Ds modified for PL lenses – the sensor is too big!). The NEX FS100s main competitor is the Panasonic AF 101 – a micro 4/3” sensor camera. The NEX FS100 is more sensitive and matches it in every regard making it an overall winner.
